Librarian

Hi!

For an upcoming 2000pts battle, I’m trying to finish most of the painting.
It’s been almost a year since I began this blog and this project, so it’s about time I move closer to the finish line.

Anyway, here’s an update on the newest project – The Librarian.
It’s still Work In Progress. although the power armour is just about done.

The power armour was base coated using the lovely GW Regal Blue.
The model was then generously washed all over the model using GW wash Badab Black.
After that it was touched up by painting yet another layer of  GW Regal Blue.
Extreme highlights were made by mixing GW Regal Blue and GW Skull White.
Some additional highlighting (non-extreme) were gradually made on the rounded part of the jump pack.

Well, that’s it for now.
Stay tuned for more.

Sanguinary Priest Update 2

Hi all,

Here’s a small update on the Sanguinary Priest.
I’ve now painted all the purity seals, gems, and the crest on the chest.
Furthermore, I’ve touched up a bit on the jump pack and also painted wires and the flasks that the Priest carries around the waist. I’m not completely satisfied with the flasks, but it’ll do for now.

It’s funny how when you haven’t painted for some time, the creativity and openness for finding new solutions, mixing new colours, etc. all increase. It’s as if the mind craves to express itself some how.

Anyway, to the pictures.

Sanguinary Priest Update

Hi again,

I’ve done some more painting on my Sanguinary Priest and I figured I’d share then so that you can follow the Work In Progress.
The power armour is now pretty much done. I will perhaps make some touch-ups at a later stage.
I feel that he’s a bit grey still but I don’t want to overdo the white as I would like some variations in shading. You can’t highlight Skull White.

What I’ve done with the power armour is using Astronomican Grey as base coat and then I’ve mixed in more and more Skull White.
The extreme highlighting was made with Skull White.

Well, I have also added some other base coat colours to other details.

Well, enough chatter. Here are the pictures.

Sanguinary Priest Painted Old School Style

Hi again,

While painting up my Vanguard Veterans, I am changing focus for awhile just to get some change.

So, I’ve begun painting a Sanguinary Priest.
Now, I have chosen to paint my Sanguinary Priests a little bit old school style.

This is what it looks like in Space Marine Painter (from The Bolter and Chainsword):

Sanguinary Priest

And here are some WIP pictures of the Sanguinary Priest that I am currently working on.
I’ve started to paint some red for you to see what it will look like, although it was a bit too early for it.
Note that I have base coated the power armour and other parts that will be white with the GW Citadel colour of Astronomical Grey, a wonderful foundation colour that is a bit cold as it has some blue in it.

Hope you enjoyed the little update.
See you soon.

Vanguard Veterans Power Armour All Base Coated

Man, do base coating ten power armour dudes take time!

Well, now my two teams of magnetized Vanguard Veterans are all base coated and ready to be washed, shaded, and highlighted.

This is what they look like after base coat has been applied.

Finished Base Coat Of Vanguard Veterans

Taking pictures are actually great for noticing mistakes.
By looking at this picture I can see that I have missed a coating of diluted Mechrite Red at least one, possibly three “collars” for where the head goes.
Well, I’m heading back to the painting station to fix it.

Next step will be adding black colour in the joints of the power armour as well as other places where I need black.

See you soon.

Look, I’ve Begun Painting Again!

Hi all,

I’ve begun painting after some time off of from the hobby.

Currently, I am painting two five-men squads of Vanguard Veterans.
I’ve base coated them with a watered-down layer of Mechrite Red.
The base coat is only there for coverage before I wash with Devlan Mud and paint with Blood Red.

Well, here are some comparisons between one, two, and three layers of Mechrite Red.

That’s it for now.
I hope to give you some more updates on my painting as it progresses.

Camera Update

Alright,

So a quick update.
I am giving the Honour Guard a nice coat of Blood Red at the moment.

However,  the missus took the camera to China to shoot the Chinese Wall or something.
I guess she doesn’t prioritize my hobby…

Anyway, I’ll try to use another camera to post some pictures as we move along.

That’s it.
Stay tuned for more

Honour Guards: Painting Black and Washing

So, here’s a quick update as I won’t be doing anymore painting until Sunday.

The Honour Guards has now had their joints, between the power armour, painted.
It is merely a base coat of Chaos Black and it will receive a highlight of a grey colour, maybe Codex Grey.
I can’t tell for sure at this stage.

Further, I felt that one wash of Devlan Mud onto the power armour was insufficient.
I wanted more of a contrast between the red colour of the power armour and the recesses.
Yet, I was hesitant to use Badab Black for that.
That probably would have worked as well as there seems to be very little difference between the two washes.

Anyway, two washes and I was content.
Here is the result.

Chaos Black and Washes

If you look closely at the meltaguns, you can see that they were washed as well.
Previously, I had washed them with Devlan Mud and I liked the result.
I did it straight onto the metal, no priming or base coating.
Yet another wash and the brown colour just barely appeared.
I am looking to get something similar as I want to portray the nozzle of the gun as having experienced intense heat.
I will experiment with it a bit by giving it another wash later on.

I also applied a wash of Badab Black to the whole of the meltaguns.
It looks good, I think, although it is there more to be able to distinguish features on the meltaguns at this stage.

Also, you can see that the multagun canister was given a base coat of Chaos Black.

Alright.
That’s it for now.
Stay tuned for more.
On Sunday at the earliest.

Honour Guard: A First Coat of Blood Red and a Devlan Mud Wash

So, the next step was to apply a first coat of Blood Red to the models.
As always I use a watered down layer and it is nice to basically gain experience with every new brush stroke that I make. As I have a very limited experience in painting, it is fantastic to get a feel for what works and what does not.

Something that does not work is loading your brush with to much paint (even if it is watered down).
What I got was basically the cloudy red you get from Blood Red when you don’t water down your paint.
It looked truly awful. Well, that’s what you get for not taking your time and instead rushing it in order to write an article about it.

So, i figured I had to try and apply a wash and a glace of Devlan Mud to see if I could both get an increased shadowing effect in the recesses, as well as smoothing out the blotches of red paint coming from applying an uneven layer of Blood Red.

Here are some results.
Notice that the wash still has not dried as these pictures were taken.

Second Layer of Base Coat on Honour Guards

Slowly it progresses.

After about an hour of work of base coating yet another thin layer of Mecrite Red, it is actually starting to look a bit reddish.

This is the result.

Second layer of base coat on Honour Guards

As you can see I’ve put on the base coat fairly sloppy since it doesn’t really matter if I get some thinned paint on to something.
It will be real easy as I begin putting on base coats on details.

Alright.

That’s it for now.
Stay tuned for more.
